Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can I make four separate squares?

Yes. It is the four-position counterpart to the BWM602.

The Breville BWM604 Smart Waffle makes four separate square Belgian-style waffles in a stationary cooking area. Its practical appeal is batch size combined with a surrounding batter moat and a relatively simple control layout. It is a different proposition from the BWM640 Pro, which adds an LCD countdown and more detailed controls while keeping the four-square format.

Decide whether you actually need four positions

Four squares can help a household serve several portions from one fill. That is a real capacity difference from the two-square BWM602; it is not the ambiguous “four slices” wording sometimes applied to one quartered round waffle. Match the cooking geometry to how breakfast reaches the table.

A larger grid also asks for more batter and working room. If most mornings involve one or two waffles, having four positions may offer less everyday value than it first appears. This review does not assume that the larger model is automatically the better purchase or assign an unmeasured waffles-per-hour result.

Five shade settings and a manual option

The US instructions shared with the BWM602 describe five darkness settings and a manual setting. The machine adjusts cooking time to the selected color. It provides audible readiness and completion cues alongside indicator lights. The controls answer “how dark?” without presenting a numeric countdown.

Opening the lid also affects the cycle. The manual says that leaving it open beyond the specified short interval resets the ready/cooking behavior and restarts the cycle when closed. Repeatedly checking a waffle is therefore not a neutral action. Start with the manual's guidance, adjust for your mix, and let the controls do their intended job.

A moat is useful, but it still needs cleaning

The surrounding channel catches batter that passes the edge of the grids and cooks it. That can keep a small overflow within the appliance, but it does not make batter disappear. The channel and cooking surface need cleaning after use. The instructions call for soft wiping and prohibit immersion.

There are no detachable cooking plates in this configuration. If “dishwasher-safe plates” is your deciding condition, compare the All-Clad WD822D51 or Cuisinart WAF-300NAS. The Cuisinart also changes the supplied plate options by adding a pancake set. A moat and removable plates solve different parts of ownership.

Measure the operating space, not only the box

Breville's current US product page lists a closed size of 15.5 inches wide, 11.5 inches deep and 6 inches high. The instruction book separately requires four inches of space on all sides and nothing on top. The closed height is not lid-open clearance, and a machine that can be pushed into a cupboard is not necessarily safe to operate there.

The locking latch is used for storage after cooling, not during cooking. The manual's storage wording does not confirm upright storage, so that requirement should take you toward a model whose instructions explicitly support it. Avoid assuming that every latch-equipped waffle maker can stand on its end.

When the Pro is worth comparing

The BWM640XL Pro is relevant if a numerical countdown, batter selection or an add-time control would help your routine. Those features are not proof of superior taste or a reason to ignore the fixed-plate care common to both models. If you chiefly want four waffles and a shade dial, the BWM604 remains a coherent choice.

Try the four-square, moat-equipped route to keep the same serving need across alternatives. Check the exact BWM604 model rather than relying on the phrase “Smart Waffle,” which Breville uses across materially different versions.
