Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can four squares and a countdown coexist?
Yes. This is the four-position Pro model.
Explore this need in the finder →Is there an audible finish?
Yes. The US instructions document the end alert.
Explore this need in the finder →Are the plates removable?
No. The grids and moat are cleaned in place.
Explore this need in the finder →The Breville BWM640XL Smart Waffle Pro combines four separate square cooking positions with a numerical countdown, batter selection and twelve shade levels. Its clearest use case is a household that wants a larger batch and more guidance while it cooks. Its main limitation is equally clear: the plates and overflow moat remain attached for cleaning.
Capacity first, control package second
The four-square mold is the reason to compare this model with the two-square BWM620XL. Both share the Pro instruction book and control concept, but they do not serve the same batch. Think about how many separate waffles you want ready together before deciding whether the display features justify a place on your counter.
If four squares are essential but a countdown is not, the BWM604 is the more direct comparison. If only one person normally eats waffles, a large batch may be an occasional advantage rather than an everyday need. No universal serving-count or speed ranking can replace that household decision.
What the screen actually tells you
The LCD shows the heating and cooking stages and a countdown once the lid closes. An audible signal announces the end. That combination can help you coordinate other breakfast tasks, while still keeping the hot appliance supervised. It is a numeric time display, unlike the segmented progress ring on the All-Clad digital machine.
The menu selects among four named waffle types and a custom setting. The separate darkness control has twelve levels. Breville says that the calculated time can vary between batches with the plate temperature and the selected settings. Treat that as the intended control behavior rather than expecting every fill to finish in the same number of minutes.
Refining a batch without confusing the controls
The “A Bit More” button adds a proportionate amount of time to the selected cooking cycle. The restart button resets a countdown for the next batch. Those are different operations. Understanding them is more useful than simply counting how many buttons appear on the panel.
For a recipe you make repeatedly, the combination gives room to find a preferred result. It does not establish objectively better crispness or evenness than another iron. We have not run a controlled cooking comparison, so this assessment uses the controls to explain fit rather than presenting invented performance scores.
A deep square grid remains a deep square grid
The Classic menu position does not physically convert the plates to shallow traditional round waffles. If that is the breakfast you want, the No-Mess is a more appropriate starting point. Recipe labels should also not be confused with removable pancake plates, which the Cuisinart WAF-300NAS supplies separately.
The integrated channel catches batter overflow, but it needs wiping along with the fixed cooking area. The manual prohibits immersion and advises against abrasive tools and nonstick cooking sprays. A removable-plate requirement should redirect your search before extra control features become a distraction.
Allow enough room to use it
The current US product page lists closed dimensions of 14.9 inches wide, 12.3 inches deep and 5.1 inches high. The manual separately calls for at least four inches of space on every side and nothing on top. Those are not interchangeable measurements. A lid also needs room to open, and the storage latch must stay open while batter is cooking.
Shortlist the BWM640XL when four separate squares, an audible cue, a numeric countdown and a surrounding moat are all useful. The four-square countdown route expresses that combination. If washing access is your stronger requirement, compare the removable-plate All-Clad digital model and accept that its display works differently.
